The rhythmic beat of the drums, the synchronized clang of cymbals, and the mesmerizing movements of the lion—these were the sights and sounds of the 1st FCAAF Interschool Lion Dance Competition. In the midst of fierce competition, the Xavier Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe (XDL) showcased their dedication and mastery, securing the prestigious 1st Runner-Up title. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the team and Xavier School, reaffirming their commitment to excellence in both performance and cultural preservation.

A Victory Rooted in Hard Work and Team Spirit

For XDL, this victory is more than just a trophy; it is a testament to the team’s perseverance and unity. Ms. Jennifer Ngo Say, XDL Moderator, expressed how this accomplishment serves as a beacon of motivation and inspiration for the troupe.

“This victory means a lot to us. It serves as a motivation, an inspiration for the XDL members. It reminds the team that nothing is impossible as long as there is teamwork, patience, dedication, and commitment. XDL deserves this victory!” she proudly shared.

Overcoming Challenges Through Commitment and Dedication

Behind the dazzling performance was an arduous journey of preparation. Balancing multiple commitments within the school, XDL members had to dedicate additional hours to training. With practice sessions held three times a week after school, often extending until 9 PM, the team faced numerous hurdles in assembling their competition squad.

“The different schedules of the members were a challenge since many of them are involved in various school committees. Being part of XDL requires extensive training to strengthen the body and perform difficult stunts,” Ms. Say explained. Despite these obstacles, the unwavering support of fellow members, XDL alumni, and XDL parents played a crucial role in keeping the team motivated.

Building Skills Beyond the Performance

Beyond the art of lion dance, XDL instills lifelong values in its members. The troupe fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and discipline, shaping well-rounded individuals who take pride in their heritage.

“Most important is the sense of brotherhood—XDL is family. The team develops agility, respect, patience, understanding, hard work, and flexibility in terms of their roles within the group,” Ms. Say highlighted.

These values not only enhance their performances but also mold them into responsible individuals who carry the Xavier spirit wherever they go.

The Road to Victory

The competition required a highly skilled 10-member team performing a one-lion routine, complete with traditional cymbals, a gong, and a drum. Initially, 15 members volunteered, but only 10 could commit to the rigorous training sessions. The team had to adapt to new stunts that differed from their usual routines, making the competition an exciting yet challenging experience.

Despite these difficulties, the XDL community remained steadfast. XDL officers and fellow members provided moral support throughout the training period, ensuring that the competitors remained encouraged and focused on their goal.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for XDL

With this milestone, XDL looks forward to expanding its reach and continuing to promote Chinese culture through their performances. Ms. Say envisions a future where the team continues to grow with the support of XDL parents, XDL Alumni , XDL Alumni Parents and the Xavier School administration.

“I hope to see the XDL family continue to grow and propagate the Chinese culture with the full support of the parents, XDL Alumni, XDL Alumni parents and the XS administrators,” she shared.

XDL’s success in the 1st FCAAF Inter School Lion Dance Competition is a reflection of their dedication, resilience, and passion. As they continue to uphold and celebrate tradition, they inspire future generations of Xavier students to take part in preserving this rich cultural heritage.

The roar of the lion echoes beyond the stage—it symbolizes the heart, soul, and unwavering spirit of the Xavier Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe.
